Parashat Vayera

  1. Chumash חומש

    Vayera, sixth aliyah

    Genesis 21:22–34, with Rashi

    The parasha in brief

God appears to Abraham, who welcomes three visitors, and they announce that Sarah will have a son within a year. Abraham pleads with God to spare Sodom for the sake of any righteous people there; the angels rescue Lot and his daughters, Sodom and Gomorrah are destroyed, and Lot's wife becomes a pillar of salt. In Gerar, King Abimelech takes Sarah and returns her after God warns him in a dream. Isaac is born, Hagar and Ishmael are sent away and saved by an angel in the wilderness, and Abraham makes a treaty with Abimelech at Beersheba. God tests Abraham by commanding him to bring Isaac as an offering on Mount Moriah, and an angel stops him at the last moment, after which Abraham offers a ram in Isaac's place and God renews His blessing. The portion ends with news of the family of Abraham's brother Nahor, including the birth of Rebecca.

    Draft summary

21:22 And it came to pass at that time, that Abimelech and Phicol the captain of his host spoke unto Abraham, saying: ‘God is with thee in all that thou doest.

21:23 Now therefore swear unto me here by God that thou wilt not deal falsely with me, nor with my son, nor with my son’s son; but according to the kindness that I have done unto thee, thou shalt do unto me, and to the land wherein thou hast sojourned.’

21:24 And Abraham said: ‘I will swear.’

21:25 And Abraham reproved Abimelech because of the well of water, which Abimelech’s servants had violently taken away.

21:26 And Abimelech said: ‘I know not who hath done this thing; neither didst thou tell me, neither yet heard I of it, but to-day.’

21:27 And Abraham took sheep and oxen, and gave them unto Abimelech; and they two made a covenant.

21:28 And Abraham set seven ewe-lambs of the flock by themselves.

21:29 And Abimelech said unto Abraham: ‘What mean these seven ewe-lambs which thou hast set by themselves?’

21:30 And he said: ‘Verily, these seven ewe-lambs shalt thou take of my hand, that it may be a witness unto me, that I have digged this well.’

21:31 Wherefore that place was called Beer-sheba; because there they swore both of them.

Iggeret HaKodesh, epistle 29

19 Cheshvan in the yearly cycle

    In brief

Epistle 29 opens with the verse "A woman of valor is the crown of her husband" and Talmudic sayings calling halachot the "crown of the Torah" and assuring whoever studies them of the World to Come. It asks why halachot in particular earn these descriptions. The answer begins with the Arizal's teaching that every Jew must fulfil all 613 commandments to complete the garments of his soul. Created souls cannot bear the divine light, the "pleasantness of the L-rd," without being nullified, so a garment derived from that light must clothe them, as Moses entered the cloud to see.

    Draft summary

TWENTY-NINE. “A woman of valor is the crown (atarah) of her husband….”

In the Gemara, fourth chapter of Megillah, it is stated: “He who makes use of the crown, passes away …this applies to one who makes use of a person who can repeat halachot, the crown (keter) of the Torah…. It was taught in the academy of Elijah: whoever studies halachot is assured….”

    Psalm 90

1 A Prayer of Moses the man of God. Lord, Thou hast been our dwelling-place in all generations.

2 Before the mountains were brought forth, Or ever Thou hadst formed the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, Thou art God.

3 Thou turnest man to contrition; And sayest: 'Return, ye children of men.'

4 For a thousand years in Thy sight Are but as yesterday when it is past, And as a watch in the night.

5 Thou carriest them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep; In the morning they are like grass which groweth up.

6 In the morning it flourisheth, and groweth up; In the evening it is cut down, and withereth.

7 For we are consumed in Thine anger, And by Thy wrath are we hurried away.

8 Thou hast set our iniquities before Thee, Our secret sins in the light of Thy countenance.

9 For all our days are passed away in Thy wrath; We bring our years to an end as a tale that is told.

10 The days of our years are threescore years and ten, Or even by reason of strength fourscore years; Yet is their pride but travail and vanity; For it is speedily gone, and we fly away.

11 Who knoweth the power of Thine anger, And Thy wrath according to the fear that is due unto Thee?

12 So teach us to number our days, That we may get us a heart of wisdom.

13 Return, O LORD; how long? And let it repent Thee concerning Thy servants.

14 O satisfy us in the morning with Thy mercy; That we may rejoice and be glad all our days.

15 Make us glad according to the days wherein Thou hast afflicted us, According to the years wherein we have seen evil.

16 Let Thy work appear unto Thy servants, And Thy glory upon their children.

17 And let the graciousness of the Lord our God be upon us; Establish Thou also upon us the work of our hands; Yea, the work of our hands establish Thou it.

  4. Daf Yomi

    Bechorot 42

Why, then, is it taught in a baraita that the verse: “Then your valuation shall be for the male” (Leviticus 27:3), includes one whose status as a male is certain but not a tumtum or a hermaphrodite? The Gemara answers: Omit from this baraita the mention of a tumtum, as it is referring only to a hermaphrodite, which is a distinct entity.

The Gemara suggests: Come and hear the continuation of that baraita: One might have thought that these shall not be valuated according to the valuation of a man, but they shall be valuated according to the valuation of a woman. Therefore, the verse states: “The male,” and in the following verse it states: “And if she is a female, then your valuation shall be thirty shekels” (Leviticus 27:4), indicating only one whose status as a male or female is certain, but not a tumtum or a hermaphrodite, which are categorized as neither male nor female. The Gemara again answers: Omit from this baraita the mention of a tumtum, as it is referring only to a hermaphrodite.
