    Genesis 21:5–21, with Rashi

    The parasha in brief

God appears to Abraham, who welcomes three visitors, and they announce that Sarah will have a son within a year. Abraham pleads with God to spare Sodom for the sake of any righteous people there; the angels rescue Lot and his daughters, Sodom and Gomorrah are destroyed, and Lot's wife becomes a pillar of salt. In Gerar, King Abimelech takes Sarah and returns her after God warns him in a dream. Isaac is born, Hagar and Ishmael are sent away and saved by an angel in the wilderness, and Abraham makes a treaty with Abimelech at Beersheba. God tests Abraham by commanding him to bring Isaac as an offering on Mount Moriah, and an angel stops him at the last moment, after which Abraham offers a ram in Isaac's place and God renews His blessing. The portion ends with news of the family of Abraham's brother Nahor, including the birth of Rebecca.

    Draft summary

21:5 And Abraham was a hundred years old, when his son Isaac was born unto him.

21:6 And Sarah said: ‘God hath made laughter for me; every one that heareth will laugh on account of me.’

21:7 And she said: ‘Who would have said unto Abraham, that Sarah should give children suck? for I have borne him a son in his old age.’

21:8 And the child grew, and was weaned. And Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned.

21:9 And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne unto Abraham, making sport.

21:10 Wherefore she said unto Abraham: ‘Cast out this bondwoman and her son; for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac.’

21:11 And the thing was very grievous in Abraham’s sight on account of his son.

21:12 And God said unto Abraham: ‘Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah saith unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall seed be called to thee.

21:13 And also of the son of the bondwoman will I make a nation, because he is thy seed.’

21:14 And Abraham arose up early in the morning, and took bread and a bottle of water, and gave it unto Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child, and sent her away; and she departed, and strayed in the wilderness of Beer-sheba.

Iggeret HaKodesh, epistle 28

18 Cheshvan in the yearly cycle

    In brief

The section explains that at the passing of great tzaddikim, who offered their souls to G-d in love while reading the Shema each day, a "time of favor" (et ratzon) from the eighth attribute of mercy, notzer chesed, is revealed. Their lifelong service, hidden above until then, becomes manifest at their passing. This divine kindness then atones for the sins of the generation, even deliberate sins rooted in the three impure kelipot, below nogah. Altar sacrifices atone only for inadvertent sins arising from the animal soul, the section says, which is why Miriam's death is placed beside the red heifer.

    Draft summary

Now, it is known that abba draws from the eighth mazal, which is the tuft of notzer chesed. Notzer is (composed of the same) letters (as) ratzon. It is the et ratzon that becomes revealed and radiates in a manifest way, from above downward, at the time of the passing of the great tzaddikim who serve the L–rd out of love, surrendering their soul to the L–rd during their lifetime every evening and morning when reading the Shema. For thereby they elevate the mayin nukvin to abba and imma, as known. (The same applies to (their) study of the Torah, which derives from chochmah.) Thus, the aspects of the mayin duchrin were elicited thereby and descended from the tuft of notzer chesed, and they, indeed, radiate in a manifest way at the time of their passing. For as known, all the effort of man, which his soul toiled during his lifetime, is above in a hidden and concealed state. It becomes revealed and radiates in a manifest way from above downward at the time of his passing.

Now, by the manifestation of the illumination of the tuft of notzer chesed at the time of their passing, the chesed of the L–rd radiates from world to world over those who fear Him and effects salvations in the midst of the earth to atone for the sin of the generation, even for the deliberate sins which are of the three impure kelipot [which are inferior to nogah]. For the mazal of notzer is of the mochin stimin of arich anpin, the source of the extractions (birurim). Thus the darkness of the shevirat hakelim is converted into the light of the world of Tikkun.
