Before the wedding it is a traditional to have an Aufruf, a communal acknowledgement of the upcoming wedding. The Aufruf is the ceremony in which the groom is called up to recite the blessing over the Torah in synagogue the date and time of the wedding is giving specials blessings before the Torah followed by a kiddush in honor of the groom and bride. Ashkenazi Jews generally have this ceremony on the Sabbath before the wedding, and Sephardic Jews often have it on the Sabbath after the wedding.
