The Meaning of an Eruv
According to Jewish law, it is forbidden to carry items in a public domain on the Shabbat.  The eruv is an intricate construct of beams, walls, wires, and poles.  If all connected in a certain way creates an enclosure.  And thus, everything in it is no more considered public, but private domain allowing for carrying to take place on Shabbat.
